Rough sketches on a napkin or pictures ripped out of magazines are a common starting point when designing your new home.  Brendon at Glen Loddon Homes can transform these ideas and dreams into reality.

Brendon’s qualifications in building design and drafting combined with a diverse background in the carpentry and joinery industry brings 22 years of experience to the design team.  Brendon is able to provide a visual process to designing a home allowing clients to imagine how every space in their new home works.

"Many of our clients come to Glen Loddon Homes with a rough sketch or request that a standard plan be modified to suit their individual needs.  The key elements I consider are that the design will be aesthetically pleasing and functional with consideration for changing needs over time and solar passive principles."

Basic requirements, including number and size of bedroom and living areas, flow between indoor and outdoor spaces and other specifications are incorporated into site plans, elevations, floor plans and 3D presentations for client perusal.

Glen Loddon Home clients’ know exactly what to expect from their new or renovated home through the use of ‘renders’.  Computer generated images of the house design allow photo quality representations of the home from a street view.

Another valuable purpose of the 3D presentation is the ability to look at the finer details of the house design right down to how the shadows will move throughout the day and year.  This highlights another of Brendon’s interests – solar passive design.

"I actively encourage clients to talk through the advantages of using solar passive design.  With minimal outlay, designs can be more environmentally friendly and cheaper to run without compromising the overall look of the home that the client desires."

An important aspect early in the design process is the future plans for the house – will it be valuable for resale, will it meet the needs of a growing family or the accessibility needs of ageing occupants?  Brendon stresses the importance of looking beyond the needs of the family in the here and now.

"It may be as simple as adding another bedroom for a growing family or incorporating accessible design principles with level walk-in showers, wider hallways or unimpeded access to your alfresco area."

Brendon’s top design tips include:

1. Collect clippings of house styles you like – draw a rough sketch of a floor plan.
2. Carefully look at your needs for the home – now and into the future.
3. Consider taking advantage of solar passive design principles through easy to achieve options such as placement and size of windows, orientation of the house and rooms to allow for utilisation of natural sunlight.
