The Glen Loddon Homes TeamDaniel RyanEnergy rating assessor Crunching the numbers, or energy rating stars, is a challenge that Daniel enjoys on a daily basis. A recently qualified energy rating assessor, Daniel has had good grounding, learning from his father, Chris, Glen Lodden Homes’ senior energy rater and general manager. Daniel, who joined Glen Lodden Homes a year ago, has been involved in many aspects of the company’s operations, from IT and producing online and print marketing material to energy rating, which is where his passion lies after finding a niche in this specialist role. "Energy rating is very challenging and every house is different. It is extremely satisfying to make small, but subtle, changes to the design and find out how this affects the results of the energy rating." Daniel says that even the slightest change to the orientation of a home, its window size and even the roof colour, all has a bearing on what rating the home achieves. "There is nothing more challenging than making a home accomplish a 5 or 6 star rating. One of the first homes I assessed was a 6 star and I learnt some clever ways to achieve higher ratings with few options to work with," says Daniel. It is rare to be able to change the orientation of the home, says Daniel, as most people are very set in which way they want their living and bedrooms to face. "Taking this into account, you then have to be very creative in other ways to achieve excellent energy ratings." Daniel says some of the tricks he uses include introducing double-glazing, assessing and altering the amount of windows and their size and height and insuring maximum insulation in the walls and ceilings. "Although I spend a lot of my time tweaking designs on the computer, to finally see the finished result of my work is always very satisfying. You can’t get better than this – to see a superbly finished home that achieves top-rate energy efficiency." Daniel says that being a part of a talented and dedicated team makes his job a lot easier and very fulfilling.
