Providing Accessible Living

Making Your Home Accessible

Many families live with the inconvenience of their home not meeting their needs due to mobility, disabilities or changing requirements. The resulting stress can lead to people not being able to maximise their enjoyment of life and, often, the added pressure of having to find more suitable accommodation.

There are many features, fixtures and design elements homeowners can incorporate into a new home, or remodel their existing house, to provide a more appropriate living arrangement and sometimes just slight tweaks or features can make all the difference.

Bendigo builders Glen Loddon Homes specialise in building or remodelling homes to suit people with individual needs.
Co-owner Glenn Wade says the smallest of changes to your Accessibility Meeting
existing home or building plans can make all the difference.

"Whether it’s a wheelchair, pram, stroller, walking frame, crutches or improvements for people who are vision impaired or elderly, we specialise in design solutions to address all of these issues." Glenn, who has a daughter in a wheelchair, not only has first-hand experience in designing homes to suit individuals’ specific needs, he also has built or remodelled in excess of 12 homes for people facing various challenges.

"Designing mobility-friendly homes does not have to be a complicated task and it is an affordable investment. We have built homes for quadriplegics and others with all sorts of varying needs and are more than happy to sit down not only with yourself but with your occupational therapist or physiotherapist to make sure that your home caters to your needs," says Glenn.

One family Glen Loddon Homes has built for is the Deans. With Jason Dean a quadriplegic and needing various purpose-built design elements in his home, his family never thought they would be able to experience living in a home that is ideally suited to all of them. "We went to Glen Loddon Homes in our quest to build our dream home. Right from the start they were fantastic and the whole team was great to deal with," says Jason. "They had plenty of house plans and designs for us to look at and were more than happy for us to discuss our own plans and ideas. Because they have had experience in building houses for people with disabilities, they were a great help. From start to finish they were professional and pleasant to deal with and nothing was too hard for them," says Jason.

Not only does Glen Loddon Homes have the expertise to design a home to cater for your current accessibility needs they also specialise in making sure clients take into account their future needs. "When designing a home it is a good idea to have at least one access point into the home that is mobility friendly – be it for yourself, relatives or elderly parents,’ says Glenn. "With the ageing population, designing homes catering for mobility issues is only going to get more important and be an essential feature and definitely increase the value of your home."

An award-winning builder delivering tailored homes for people, Glen Loddon Homes is not a ‘project builder’ – they are as individual as you are.
