Providing Accessible Living
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
WE have been designing homes catering for people who have mobility issues for a few years now," Glenn Wade of Glen Loddon Homes explains. "Designing mobility-friendly homes does not have to be a complicated task and it is an affordable additional investment."
Lowered kitchen benches, wider doors and hallways, a large, open and accessible shower, the elimination of level variations between the garage and the house along with outdoor areas, and ensuring all sliding external glass doors are recessed into the slab all contribute to making a home user-friendly for everybody.
"We are more than happy at the design stage to sit down with your occupational therapist or physiotherapist to make sure that the home caters to your individual needs," Glenn says. "When designing a home, although it is hard to cater for the future, it is a good idea to have at least one access point into the home that is mobility friendly, be it for yourself, relatives or elderly parents."
Glenn adds that the company is also seeing an increase in demand for homes with improved accessibility. "One of our homes in Epsom that was designed specifically for individuals with mobility issues sold within days," he says. "With the ageing population, designing homes which cater for mobility issues is going to continue to be an essential feature."
